Thursday, September 3, 2015 was a breezy and sunny day. It was also the first SJSU Spartans Football game of the season!
This was CommUniverCity’s first ever large-scale partnership with SJSU Athletics, and we were determined to to have it be a success. The challenge: Invite as many downtown San Jose community members to attend the game as possible. The end results: More than 1,400 residents turned out to watch SJSU defeat the New Hampshire Wildcats.
According to one of the attendees, “The SJSU event was great I was able to take 3 people to the game that had never been before… Thank you for a wonderfully set up event.”
Of the 1,400 residents about 400 were treated to a tailgate celebration that included a meal from Estela’s Catering, festival games and a raffle. The partnership even made it to the daily review of an national athletic association.
In addition to being able to provide residents with a night out to thank them for their hard work in the community, CommUniverCity was also given the opportunity to have some action on the field as well as the Jumbo-Tron. Executive Director and SJSU Professor Dayana Salazar, District 3 Council Aide Patricia Ceja, Spartan Keyes Resident Richard Stewart and SJSU’s Interim President Martin, representatives from each of CommUniverCity’s partnerships, were all honorary team captains for the coin toss.
Over on the Jumbo-Tron, CommUniverCity debuted it’s College Day Video for the first time! College Day will be held on Friday, October 9, 2015. The theme for College Day 2015 “Reach Higher. Own Your Future!”
Now in its 5th year, College Day has changed the conversation for many students. Be involved in brightening student’s futures! For this day, we are looking for folks who can act as mentors for approximately one hour of the day, go into classrooms and talk to students about their college experiences. For anyone wondering what they could possibly say, talking points and activity ideas are available! Anyone up to the challenge can sign up today! Together we can get all students on a pathway to college!
Certainly, none of this would have been possible were it not for Pacific Gas and Electric sponsoring the night. They have our greatest thanks.
