“Money, Money Money,” aside from being a catchy Abba song and it can be a source of stress for those who don’t know how to manage it.
According to NerdWallet, an independent financial information compiling site, the average US household credit card debt of $15,270 in 2013 and 40% of working Americans have no money saved for retirement (from Statistic Brain). These statistics are a small reflection of how people struggle in managing money. Financial literacy is important because it gives people the knowledge and tools to reduce the amount of debt and teaches people how to save for their future so that they may have some peace of mind in this large aspect of their life.
As a way to engage the central San Jose community, CommUniverCity and their community partners are collaboating in a Financial Literacy education project through educational workshops. San Jose State finance students will be leading workshops about managing money. The workshops titled “Money Matters” are based on the Hands on Banking Curriculum. Topics covered will include learning more about credit score, FICO, savings, investing, spending money wisely, good money habits, protecting yourself financially, and using credit to your advantage.
