SUN Halloween Fair
The Halloween-themed fair is a community
engagement activity in collaboration with the South
University Neighborhood (SUN). It offers a fun day of
celebrating community, an important aspect for building
and sustaining neighborhood vibrancy and pride.
In the Fall of 2023, CommUniverCity and SJSU students
from BUS3 12: Managing My Life collaborated with the
South University Neighborhood (SUN) association to cohost a Halloween-themed fair at O’Donnell Garden Park.
The Halloween Fair showcased diverse local organizations
committed to supporting the San Jose community with
over 100 community members in attendance.
Each local organization provided valuable resources and information tailored to attendees’ needs. Participating organizations included the San Jose Conservation Corps and Charter School, Sacred Heart Community Service, Promotores, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, and Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful. Sacred Heart Community Service offered guidance on obtaining financial assistance for water bills and distributed free tote bags containing 5-minute shower timers to promote water conservation. Our Promotoras (Promoters) shared insights into city services such as free Wi-Fi and local food resources. Second Harvest of Silicon Valley detailed access to food assistance programs like CalFresh and provided free booklets with cooking tips.
The Halloween Fair effectively promoted community engagement by delivering essential resources and fostering connections among residents. It aimed to enhance the quality of life in San Jose and encourage sustainable practices among its diverse population.
