Promotores Program

The Promotores Program is a pilot initiative designed to develop effective outreach methods through community events, tabling at various locations, community meetings, and school cafecitos. The promotores were established with a focus on three key priorities: stabilizing and strengthening families and recognizing the pivotal role of family stability in community well-being. Secondly, there was an emphasis on supporting small businesses, acknowledging their significance in local economies and the need to bolster their resilience. Lastly, the program aimed at supporting workers, acknowledging the vital contribution of the workforce to community development.

As the program evolved and additional events were incorporated, the City of San Jose sought out our recommendations on improving connections with community members in need of resources. Our response was to establish a Promotores Hotline and email communication.

The City of San Jose expressed interest in this approach, and our organization received support to continue testing this outreach method. We set up a Google number for the Promotores and registered them on our cucsj.org domain to handle emails. We began testing this approach at smaller events once the Google number and email were established.

Unsure if this would cause more than our team of 14 could handle, so wanted to scale events that were 50 attendees and under first. We added the phone number and email to stickers on giveaways and one-page flyers and provided the Promotores team business cards. After approximately 3 events, we had calls & emails!

Project Impacts

Our 14 Promotores were able to reach thousands of residents throughout this program, and the Promotores built a bulk skill set along the way

We heard from our community that “they need more,” said our Promotores team, Maria Ines, Bibiana Cruz & Maria Lopez

We found that although we could reach over a few hundred people with the hotline, we would need to establish a working, streamlined process to get these folks to a representative for the resource they are seeking. This was put on the city’s radar for future pilot programs like this
