Friends of Five Wounds Trail

Since 2002, members of the Five Wounds/Brookwood Terrace neighborhood have had the creation of a formal trail connecting Coyote Creek at Story Road to the Lower Silver Creek Trail as a Top 10 community goal. With the help of Urban Planning and Political Science faculty and students, numerous planning reports and annual cleanups have supported the work of the community-based organization, Friends of Five Wounds Trail. When completed, this trail will create a linear park that runs through Central San Jose, providing a paved trail for walking, running, and biking. As part of this effort, SJSU Political Science students and

residents met this fall in a collaborative effort to keep the informal trail clean. CommUniverCity also supported the City of San Jose’s successful application for external funding for infrastructure planning, moving the community’s trail dream one step closer to reality.

Project Impacts

SJSU political science students got to meet with West Valley College counterparts and learned about the importance of resident advocacy for the creation of green space in park-poor areas

The Valley Transportation Authority Board of Directors approved a $4.14 million Measure B grant award that will provide the funds need to expand the project and connect the Lower Silver Creek Trail and Coyote Creek Trail to public transit lines and pedestrian-friendly pathways

Volunteers along with SJSU and West Valley students collected over 100 bags of trash
