Carmen Cautiverio graciously hosted us at her center for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.downtownenrichment.org\/\">Downtown Enrichment<\/a> Program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">About<strong> 70%<\/strong> of attendees agreed that the Open House increased their knowledge of Northside\u2019s issues, assets, and priorities. Residents left feeling inspired by the students\u2019 enthusiasm for helping the neighborhood achieve their community goals. It was a learning experience for some residents too, who were not aware of certain issues prior to the Open House. For example, a resident shared that their favorite part of the Open House was:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201c[My favorite part of the Open House was] l<\/strong><b>earning about bike-ways. I hadn\u2019t thought about it. I liked that someone could speak in Spanish with me. Sometimes we can\u2019t communicate. Thank you for educating our community.\u201d\u00a0\u2013Northside Neighborhood resident<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The cohort of SJSU Urban Planning graduate students worked on a unique project this year for the event, designing a temporary Curbside Cafe for Rollo\u2019s Donuts, which was a huge success!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Local residents, business owners, and our community partners showed up to support the Curbside Cafe. Their feedback was collected in a survey and has become crucial information that can be utilized for future design ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[slideshow_deploy id=&#8217;4678&#8242;]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Community input for the Curbside Cafe includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Designing protective walls and fencing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Making it more family friendly (and pet friendly)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Providing bike racks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Not getting rid of the parking spaces <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">More shade and planters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Wayfinding signs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Making it permanent!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Even Mayor Sam Liccardo sat back and relaxed at the pop up Curbside Cafe with the students and our staff. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Furthermore, the graduate students and Kyle Williams created a video titled: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B6Zk-PXQiqA\"><strong>The Gateway to City Hall<\/strong><\/a>\u201d showcasing Northside businesses and residential input about their collective priorities.<\/span> A resident shared that their favorite part about the video was being able to see \u201cneighbors speak on issues important to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B6Zk-PXQiqA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=vi&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The Open House was a great opportunity for the residents and students to interact and discuss how community priorities can be achieved.
