Aerospace Engineering is only offered during the Fall semester. This project replicates the concept of a science fair and incorporates experiential learning of aerospace engineering concepts. In the Fall of 2023, we worked with Washington Elementary and ACE Inspire Academy, and since Washington Elementary has been increasing its students’ STEM program, Aerospace Engineering was a perfect fit.<\/p>

\u00a0SJSU faculty Maria Chierichetti and Eduardo Rubino led a total of 32 student groups through the project. At Washington Elementary, there were 10 SJSU groups, and each SJSU group was assigned a classroom to teach in for the day, incorporating experiential learning through interactive activities. For example, one group brought a simulator that replicated the force of air at high speed, and Washington Students were then asked to make paper airplanes to test the stability when it reached high speeds. There were no rotations at this site since the classrooms were far apart.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

At ACE Inspire Academy, 22 SJSU student groups collaborated with the principal to assign an SJSU student group to corresponding grade levels [6th-8th]. The event was hosted outside in a science fair style. Each SJSU group had about 10 ACE students who rotated between the activities every 15 minutes. This school expressed the importance of their students receiving STEM education, and we were happy to reach the entire school.<\/p>

Given current State and local initiatives to emphasize STEM education, early exposure to aerospace Engineering empowers K-12 students to pursue engineering as a future. Projects such as this have the potential to positively impact diversity in the STEM workforce. A 2021 STEM diversity report cites that only 9% of STEM workers are Black, and 15% are Latino.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
