Marketing and Communications Specialist
Open to SJSU students only
Start date: January 2027, for the Spring 2027 semester (with a possibility of an extension)
General time commitment: 10-15 hours/week
Hourly rate: $18.45-$20

CommUniverCity SJSU is a partnership dedicated to strengthening community connections, health, and education in underserved neighborhoods of Central San José. Working alongside residents, faculty, students, and community partners, we support community-driven initiatives that promote educational opportunity, healthy environments, and neighborhood empowerment.
Position Overview
The Marketing and Communications Specialist will assist with internal/external communications and branding of the organization. The Specialist documents and promotes the work of CommUniverCity-affiliated students, faculty, staff, and partners to external and internal stakeholders. The Specialist will write compelling stories to further CommUniverCity’s goals of promoting community health and environmental protection, fostering a college-going culture, and improving neighborhood infrastructure. Working with the Executive Director and Leadership Team your work will inform and inspire our audiences to take part in making San José a vibrant place to live, study, and work.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently create content for internal and external communications while adhering to CommUniverCity and SJSU brand guidelines
- Spearhead social media strategy and content creation across multiple platforms
- Attend organization events to capture photographs and conduct interviews
- Create flyers and other collateral materials using graphic design skills and content provided by Project Coordinators
- Curate impactful content for CommUniverCity’s website
- Write and edit blog posts
- Produce monthly newsletters
- Support presentation development and delivery at the monthly Steering Committee meetings
- Contribute to the creation and production of the organization’s Annual Report
Required Qualifications
- MUST be a current SJSU student in academic good standing
- Must be a Fall 2027 graduate or later
- Authorized to work in the U.S.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides) and Canva
- Familiarity with various social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook)
- Experience working in a self-directed, low-supervision environment
- Ability to work collaboratively in team settings
- Effective organizational and time management skills
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Reliable method of transportation
Preferred Qualifications
- Leadership experience
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Valid California driver’s license
- Event photography skills
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, or various generative AI platforms
