{"id":6126,"date":"2018-05-25T17:37:28","date_gmt":"2018-05-25T17:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cucsj.org\/?p=6126"},"modified":"2018-05-25T17:37:28","modified_gmt":"2018-05-25T17:37:28","slug":"bringing-vibrancy-art-heart-to-delmas-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cucsj.org\/pt\/2018\/05\/25\/bringing-vibrancy-art-heart-to-delmas-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Bringing Vibrancy, Art &amp; Heart to Delmas Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Authors: Katherine Cushing, Executive Director; Nicole Guzman, Project Coordinator<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Through our new partnership with the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/delmasparknac.yolasite.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Delmas Park Neighborhood Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> (DPNA), CommUniverCity connected <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjsu.edu\/urbanplanning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">SJSU Graduate Urban Planning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> students studying tactical urbanism with community organizations and residents. The term tactical urbanism refers to the use of inexpensive, short-term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">actions&#8211;think flash mobs and temporary parks&#8211;that can build social connections and inspire permanent positive neighborhood change. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Together, students and resident leaders reached out to all inhabitants of the 400-home boutique community to identify public priorities and build community. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Throughout the spring semester, SJSU Graduate Urban planning students dedicated hundreds of hours developing proposals to improve residential quality of life in the community, ranging from creating safer intersections to encouraging people to nearby parks and businesses. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">To showcase the work and bring neighbors together, CommUniverCity hosted a pop-up park on a bright Sunday morning. With the help of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanjoselearningcenter.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">San Jose Learning Cente<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">r, student and resident volunteers transformed the parking lot into a festive gathering space. Approximately 30 residents and 25 SJSU students, faculty, and staff attended.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6131\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6131\" style=\"width: 315px\" style=\"font-weight:400;\">Residents appreciated the effort made to put on the event. \u201cI\u2019m happy someone cares enough about my neighborhood enough to put on an event like this,\u201d said one apartment dweller. Another participant commented on how passionate the students were. The final class project will be posted on our Community Planning Page this summer.<\/p>\n<p>As part of their coursework, Urban and Regional Planning students recently completed a <a href=\"http:\/\/cucsj.org\/pt\/community-planning\/\">Community Assessment Report for Delmas Park<\/a>, which lies at the center of a planned Google Village. This document lays the foundation for better understanding the neighborhoods issues, assets, and priorities.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The SJSU students worked really hard to put this event together and their effort was very obvious!
