{"id":4560,"date":"2017-04-26T08:05:42","date_gmt":"2017-04-26T08:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cucsj.org\/?p=4560"},"modified":"2017-04-26T08:05:42","modified_gmt":"2017-04-26T08:05:42","slug":"newspartankeyesspringeventasuccess","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cucsj.org\/pt\/2017\/04\/26\/newspartankeyesspringeventasuccess\/","title":{"rendered":"Hunting for Memories \u2014First Annual Spring Event a Hit!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><em>Author: Elizabeth Figueroa, Project Coordinator for Spartan Keyes Festival<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Thirty two years ago, the town of Homer, Georgia, won the Guinness Book of World Records for hiding 80,000 eggs for a town of 900 people to hunt. Since then, that record has been broken many times over. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The first annual <strong>Spartan Keyes Egg Hunt &amp; Pet Parade<\/strong> has a long way to go to beat that record, but it was quite a successful first attempt. Here\u2019s the story:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Funded with an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanjoseca.gov\/index.aspx?NID=5151\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">SAP Grant from Councilmember Peralez\u2019s office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, Spartan Keyes Neighborhood Leaders Rita Torres and Carol Valentine propelled the efforts of this community engagement event by hosting planning meetings in their homes (cookies included)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Soon after, CommUniverCity Intern and SJSU Communications student, Stephanie Suess, hopped on board and applied for a grant from the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.awesomefoundation.org\/en\/chapters\/sanjose\"> Awesome Foundation<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u00a0This awarded the Spartan Keyes Neighborhood Action Coalition with funds necessary to make this event a success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">After weeks of brainstorming, the team collectively agreed upon \u2018the big picture:\u2019 The event would be intimate and community oriented &#8211; just for Spartan Keyes Neighbors. This included an egg hunt for kids (separated by age group), a pet parade for our pet-loving neighbors, and \u201cspecial\u201d bubbles, courtesy of Happy Hollow Zoo Puppeteer and Spartan Keyes resident Judy Roberto. \u00a0Spring-inspired crafts and free raffles also made the list. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">See slideshow below to see it all in action!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>[slideshow_deploy id=&#8217;4562&#8242;]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">While all of these sounded like great attractions, this wouldn\u2019t be a show without a <\/span><b>star <\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">to help make this community building event impossible to resist. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Enter the Jose\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. Jose Posadas is a resident in Downtown San Jose\u2019s Northside Neighborhood who connected with Rita over the \u201cBunny\u201d. Jose Roque is an<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjsu.edu\/ae\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Aerospace Engineering student<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> at SJSU and became the star of the show with a slight nudge from Sarah Rodriguez, another superstar volunteer who is a Child Development Major at SJSU. He became <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">the <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Bunny. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Bunny that all the kids rushed to once he caught their eyes. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Bunny that posed for endless photos with all the hopeful kids. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Bunny who created a memory for families to \u2018show and tell\u2019. See gallery below of some of the memories created with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">the <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Bunny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[slideshow_deploy id=&#8217;4586&#8242;]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">In total, estimated attendance reached over 100 community members for the first annual Spartan Keyes Egg Hunt &amp; Pet Parade &#8211; just enough for our small brigade of 10 volunteers to handle and even join in the fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201c[The students&#8217;] hard work and talents really made the event a success.\u201d -Carol, lead planner from SK Neighborhood<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">While it is tempting, the Spartan Keyes Neighborhood won\u2019t be angling to beat the Guinness Book of World Records for Largest Egg Hunt anytime soon. However, it also won\u2019t be taking a hiatus since, \u201cIt was a joy to see the many children that came enjoying all the activities and all of the parents I spoke to wanted to know if we did it every year.\u201d As with the placemaking efforts of the City of San Jose\u2019s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department, this event is envisioned to be largely community focused where neighbors can meet each other to discuss immediate neighborhood issues and to engage with each other while the kids are in a stampede to snatch the most eggs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
