For the past five years, a team of residents, CommUniverCity staff, and San Jose State University students and faculty have worked diligently to organize and put on the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cucsj.org\/es\/projects\/spring-festival\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">S.U.N. Spring Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. Event highlights included performances by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akomaarts.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Akoma Arts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> and the enchanting Mariachi band from Horace Mann Elementary School. These artistic demonstrations help attendees learn about the importance of African, African-American and Mexican traditions in a fun and engaging way. A number of community organizations also provided resource tables including <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourcityforest.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Our City Forest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, CommUniverCity\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cucsj.org\/es\/projects\/growing-sustainably-cooking-matters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Sostenibilidad Creciente<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cucsj.org\/es\/projects\/get-out-the-vote\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Get Out to Vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> projects, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjpl.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">San Jose Public Library<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, the South University Neighborhood Association, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/legacyschools.us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Legacy Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stpaulsumcsj.com\/sjsu-campus-ministry.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">St. Paul\u2019s United Methodist Church Campus Ministry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. Staff representing these organizations helped attendees learn about services available to them right in their own backyards. He also gave an inspirational speech in Spanish about his vision for the city\u2019s future, which included new community development, community choice renewable energy, and public safety. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Planning and implementing the Spring Festival together strengthened the bond between residents, community-based organizations, and SJSU students and faculty. It helped the students learn about local conditions in the neighborhood from the people who live there, turning the term \u201cpark activation\u201d into something with tangible meaning. It helped residents see SJSU as part of their neighborhood and as a partner in their efforts to strengthen community and maintain safety on their streets. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Many thanks to the Kappa Delta (and friends) volunteers for being part of the Spring Festival today.
