{"id":5814,"date":"2018-02-21T19:11:13","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T19:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cucsj.org\/?p=5814"},"modified":"2018-02-21T19:11:13","modified_gmt":"2018-02-21T19:11:13","slug":"raising-awareness-through-performance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cucsj.org\/es\/2018\/02\/21\/raising-awareness-through-performance\/","title":{"rendered":"Raising Awareness Through Performance"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><b>Authors: Nicole Guzman &amp; Katherine Cushing<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">According to a 2017 study by the Pew Research Center,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2017\/04\/27\/5-facts-about-illegal-immigration-in-the-u-s\/\"> San Jose is one of the 20 metropolitan regions with the largest populations of undocumented residents in the U.S<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u00a0Immigration concerns are some of the most pressing issues in our local community. With a minimalist background, the students presented dramatic one-minute monologues to their Horace Mann audience at the San Jose State Student Union in December. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Many s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">tudents took on the role of someone with a different ethnicity or gender than their own. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The performances illustrated the range of fears, vulnerabilities, hopes, and risks the undocumented regularly encounter.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cIt opened up my eyes to the struggles of others . . . This spring the Horace Mann students will each work on a major project illustrating a pressing social issue. Being able to experience the SJSU students\u2019 performance provided them with a personal context for thinking about their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cI learned about the different challenges people have had. As the group parted ways, Sarah encouraged all participants to \u00a0\u201ccontinue the conversation.\u201d In fact, she took her own recommendation and will help lead another iteration of Social Issues Theater with a new group of students this spring.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cIt was very enlightening and memorable to see our performance have an impact on these kids and teach them more about crucial issues occurring around us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>\u2014<\/b>SJSU Communication Studies
