The weekend of September 16 was the Luna Park Chalk Art Festival’s 10 year anniversary! Of course, CommUniverCity came out to support and participate in all of the festivities. Our booth was right next to the stage, the perfect spot to interact with the chalk artists and watch the live entertainment. We had a great time promoting our upcoming events including College Day and Safe & Green Halloween. It was also a day of celebration, as the 27th Assembly District presented Luna Park Arts Foundation with a certificate of recognition!
As always, the chalk art shows off the spectacular range of talent San José possesses! Inspiration came from a variety of places including cultural heritage, the controversy around the recent DACA bill, the library’s reading lion and positive emotions. Here are some photos and highlights from the event:
This chalk art piece was created by Eddie Ramirez. Eddie is a local Northside Neighborhood resident, and he was extremely excited and grateful to be chosen as one of the featured artists this year. He has been a veteran chalk artist for 7 years in a row now! His art piece was inspired by Dia de los Muertos.
This next chalk art piece was created by Karen, a student from Valley Christian School. Her contemplative art piece was inspired by DREAM-ers and creatively embodied the idea of freedom through butterflies and paper airplanes.
Like another returning chalk artist said,
“Kindness is contagious, it’s in all of us, it is just that some of us forget.”
Art is also a great way to express how you feel and share meaningful stories. This young chalk artist wanted to share that this amethyst centered around the importance of friendship and helping others in need.
Overall, it was great to be a part of this annual event again, along with many talented artists, vendors, and other organizations that were there to celebrate art, music, and the local community.
We are already looking forward to next year’s Chalk Art Festival!
